Botanical History On This Day

1825 King Charles X awarded the Legion of Honor to Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the Flemish flower painter beloved by Marie Antoinette and Joséphine. His luminous roses and lilies—many painted from Malmaison’s gardens—set the gold standard for botanical art.

1865 Anniversary of the death of Marie-Anne Libert, Belgian botanist, mycologist, and early plant pathologist. A master of cryptogams, she documented the potato “late blight,” groundwork later expanded by Anton de Bary—knowledge gardeners still use to outsmart blight today.

Joe was Northwest Louisiana’s trusted voice on soil, pests, and strawberries—plant them in the fall! Joe spent decades with the LSU AgCenter Extension. Through hotlines, newsletters, and Master Gardeners, he turned local questions into lifelong gardeners.
