Botanical History On This Day
1859 Today is the birthday of Alice Eastwood, the self-taught botanist and heroic curator. Alice Eastwood saved almost 1,500 specimens from a burning building following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Her dedication to botany led to a legacy of resilience and preservation. She is remembered as one of California's great botanical protectors.
1880 Birthday of Carlotta Case Hall, American suffragist, fern collector, and botanist. Carlotta co-authored a botanical guidebook for Yosemite and made lasting contributions to the study of ferns. A fern species, *Aspidotis carlotta-halliae*, is named in her honor.

Today's Botanic Spark
1925 The Santa Fe New Mexican published an article titled “Yucca too Much" in the midst of a public debate about New Mexico’s state flower, with some proposing the cosmos instead of the yucca. The yucca, however, remains New Mexico's state flower to this day. Known for its hardiness, the Yucca flower symbolizes resilience in the American Southwest.
