5 Tips to Help Your Garden Now | Fine Gardening

Botanical History On This Day

1914 Film debut of iconic English actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin in Making a Living. Chaplin’s famed character, The Tramp, brought joy and captured hearts.

In the silent film City Lights, where The Tramp falls in love with a blind flower girl, the flower scene alone took 342 takes to get right, highlighting Chaplin’s perfectionism and love of gardening themes in his work.

2021 Candlemas marks the Celtic celebration of the year’s quickening midway between winter solstice and spring equinox, inspiring numerous verses forecasting winter’s end.

The snowdrop, known as the “Fair Maid of February” and “Candlemas Bells,” blooms boldly on this day with natural antifreeze. Traditions vary worldwide, from bears and badgers to groundhogs like Punxsutawney Phil, who famously “predicts” the return of spring.

Unearthed Words

In today’s excerpt from The Nature Principle, Richard Louv paints a vivid picture of Karen Harwell’s six-hundred-square-foot yard—a minifarm hosting ducks, beehives, fruit trees, an organic garden, and neighborhood teenagers engaging in “archaic social networking.” A simple morning walk with her companion, Summer, begins each day filled with noticing and appreciating the garden’s life—a heartfelt connection to “the nature principle at home”.

Today's Botanic Spark

February Snowdrop Fairy—illustrator Cicely Mary Barker wove whimsy and botany into her art by painting the Snowdrop Fairy for the flower known as the “Fair Maid of February.” Though Cicely did not believe in fairies, she lovingly created tiny guardians of flowers, pairing drawings with poetry celebrating nature’s quiet miracles in winter. Embrace the magic of Candlemas with a candle lit in the garden, welcoming spring’s return.
