Botanical History On This Day
1856 Death of Katherine Sophia Kane, the Irish botanist and horticulturist who published the first national flora of Ireland, The Irish Flora Comprising the Phaenogamous Plants and Ferns, anonymously at age 22. Her work became a key textbook at Trinity College Dublin, and in 1836, she became the first woman elected to the Botanical Society of Edinburgh. She and her husband, Sir Robert Kane, exchanged scientific notes in Greek and designed a magnificent garden in Dublin that she was reluctant to leave.
1888 Death of Josif Pančić, the Serbian botanist known as the father of Serbian botany. He discovered the Ramonda serbica, also known as the Serbian phoenix flower, a remarkable plant associated with peace symbolism following WWI. Pančić initiated plans for a botanical garden in Belgrade, though the original site was problematic due to flooding; Serbian King Milan I later donated a more suitable location.
Unearthed Words
Jean Hersey brings winter’s birdlife close to the reader with vivid, gentle descriptions of sparrows, juncos, and nuthatches at her feeder. She captures the essence of a nuthatch’s markings as nature’s own winter palette of blues, greys, tans, and golden light—a poetic portrait of quiet resilience and delicate beauty in the colder months.

This lovely book reveals tips for incorporating everlasting flowers into garden design and home decor, celebrating how drying magnifies floral beauty, especially in plants with woody stems. A magical resource for gardeners inspired by preserved blooms.

Today’s Botanic Spark
1989 A new play called "Edna for the Garden" was featured in a Melbourne, Australia newspaper. The play celebrated the charismatic Australian gardener, designer, and writer Edna Walling.
Edna’s philosophy was rooted in moss, lichen, green coloration, and natural leaf cover, with a passionate love for wild garden spaces.
