Botanical History On This Day
1779 Birthday of American botanist and statesman Joel Roberts Poinsett, who introduced the vibrant Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) to the U.S. Known as the Mexican Fire Plant, its brilliant crimson bracts and traditional use by the Aztecs as a dye and medicine mark its beauty and cultural significance.
1875 Birthday of John Jacob Mauerer, dedicated head gardener at Warley Place, Essex, whose tireless work over decades helped create an acclaimed botanical garden under the often difficult ownership of Ellen Ann Willmott. Despite harsh conditions and little recognition, Mauerer's commitment left a lasting legacy now preserved as a nature reserve.

Today's Botanic Spark
1931 On this day, Idaho adopted the Mock Orange (Philadelphus lewisii) as its state flower. Emma Sarah Edwards captured its beauty in her design for the state seal.
Known as Arrowwood by Native Americans due to its straight stems, Mock Orange was used in arrow-making. The shrub brings fragrant late-spring blooms.
