Botanical History On This Day
1616 Birthday of Flemish botanist and physician Mathias de l'Obel, who pioneered the distinction between monocots and dicots. The Lobelia plant, named in his honor, charms gardeners with its delicate blue blossoms but carries toxic properties, reflected in its common names such as Asthma Weed and Pukeweed.
1847 Birthday of inventor and scientist Alexander Graham Bell, renowned for inventing the telephone and passionately devoted to gardening. His and his wife Mabel’s love for plants is commemorated at the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, featuring a garden filled with their favorite flowers.
Unearthed Words
In My Life in Plants, Katie Vaz fondly remembers family gatherings surrounded by mismatched chairs, buzzing bug zappers, and the sour delight of freshly picked rhubarb stalks, evoking the warmth, chaos, and simple pleasures of summer days.

Today's Botanic Spark
The March Birth Flower—The Daffodil, a symbol of happiness and hope, though a single bloom is considered an omen of bad luck. Revered by poets like William Wordsworth, daffodils lighten spring gardens with golden cheer and resilience.
