Botanical History On This Day
1746 Birth of French botanist and explorer André Michaux, who established a botanical garden in North America and introduced the Camellia to Charleston, whose blossoms symbolize love and loyalty. A mural honoring André and his son now graces the Charleston Airport.
1753 Birthday of Liverpool poet, historian, and botanist William Roscoe, founder of Liverpool Botanic Garden and author of the whimsical poem The Butterfly’s Ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast. The fragrant genus Roscoea commemorates his legacy.
