Botanical History On This Day
1775 Birth of French botanist and illustrator Pierre Jean François Turpin, who produced over 6,000 botanical watercolors and famously illustrated Goethe’s “Urplant,” capturing the infinite diversity of angiosperms. Pierre’s touching legacy includes a delicate Amaryllis drawn by his son shortly before his untimely death.
1877 Birthday of Australian botanist Jean White-Haney, the first woman to hold a scientific leadership role in the Australian government. She tackled invasive prickly pear cactus by introducing natural insect controls, pioneering efforts in ecological management.
