National Plant-a-Flower Day | FTD

Botanical History On This Day

1843 Birthday of Italian-American horticulturist Francesco Franceschi, who transformed Southern California’s landscape with exotic plant introductions like the Catalina Ironwood and Italian Stone Pines. His adventurous spirit famously survived a coast guard fire while bringing botanical treasures to Santa Barbara.

2001 Garden writers Nancy Goodwin and Allen Lacy launched A Year in Our Gardens, an intimate collection of letters sharing their horticultural triumphs, challenges, and personal stories, offering timeless inspiration from two distinct yet deeply passionate gardeners.

Unearthed Words

Mike Dash, in Tulipomania, vividly recounts the rise of Tulip Mania in the 1600s, sparked by the sale of a house for three rare tulip bulbs in Hoorn, Netherlands—an event that ignited a frenzy, turning flower bulbs into coveted currency.
