Botanical History On This Day

1799 Birth of Anna Children Atkins, English botanist and pioneering photographer credited with publishing the first book illustrated with photographs. Using the cyanotype process—origin of the blueprint name—her 1843 work, Photographs of British Algae, remains a treasured botanical art legacy.

1851 Birth of Dutch botanist and microbiologist Martinus Beijerinck, who discovered viruses while researching tobacco plant diseases, revealing that agents smaller than bacteria cause infection, a foundation for virology studies still relevant today.

Unearthed Words

Constance Spry’s wartime resolve kept her flower shop open amid bombings and chaos, believing flowers helped people feel normal during crisis. Her story of resilience and joy through blooms is shared in The Surprising Life of Constance Spry.
