Botanical History On This Day
1845 Death of Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman), the legendary American orchardist who planted orchards rather than just trees and fenced them for protection. He was a pioneering herbalist and naturalist whose generosity welcomed settlers with gifts of healing herbs, leaving a legacy of apple lore and a collection preserved at the Johnny Appleseed Center in Ohio.
1988 Death of British gardening broadcaster and writer Percy Thrower, who began gardening at Windsor Castle and became England’s youngest Park Superintendent. Percy inspired generations through TV and tours, famously propagating thousands of fuchsias for Windsor, and remained dedicated even while battling Hodgkin’s disease.
Unearthed Words
William Ashworth offers us a deeper understanding of nature in an excerpt from his work, The Left Hand of Eden, as he explores how the word “nature” originally meant birth and kinship, but has come to separate the natural from the made world, shaping our view of creation and reality.
