Botanical History On This Day

1699 John Bartram, one of America’s earliest botanists and plant explorers, was born. He was the founder of the first botanical garden in the United States and was praised by Linnaeus as the greatest natural botanist in the world.

1817 English flower painter Arabella Elizabeth Roupell was born. Her South African botanical illustrations were championed by Nathaniel Wallich and William Jackson Hooker and published in the rare folio Specimens of the Flora of South Africa by a Lady.
