Botanical History On This Day
1783 Birthday of John Claudius Loudon, the Scottish botanist, garden designer, and prolific writer who shaped Victorian horticulture. Loudon championed the "Gardenesque" style, emphasizing the beauty of individual specimen plants set in formal geometric beds, distinct from the naturalistic "Picturesque" style.
An advocate for botanical study and public green spaces, Loudon invented the term "arboretum" and significantly influenced landscape design with works such as the Derby Arboretum. Despite disabilities later in life, he remained a dedicated scholar, dictating his final book before passing in 1843.
1892 Birthday of Hollywood icon Mary Pickford, known as America’s sweetheart and a passionate tree lover. Alongside Douglas Fairbanks, she planted the first tree—a Japanese cedar—in California’s Forest of Fame. Mary was fond of eating roses as a girl, believing their beauty and fragrance would brighten her own. A generous spirit, she gifted actor John Gilbert a garden bench, and her love of flowers often intersected with her cinematic emotions.
