Botanical History On This Day
1839 Birthday of Joseph Trimble Rothrock, the American environmentalist and botanist, hailed as the "Father of Forestry" in Pennsylvania. Overcoming childhood illness, Rothrock pursued a career in the natural sciences and served in the Civil War.
As Pennsylvania’s first forestry commissioner, he spearheaded efforts to preserve forests, promote education, and prevent fires, working to transform devastated landscapes into thriving state forests. His vision and legacy inspire Arbor Day celebrations in Pennsylvania and beyond.
1900 Death anniversary of British botanist Phoebe Lankester, an accessible writer and plant educator known for her popular works on British ferns and thrift. Widowed with eleven children, she supported herself by writing syndicated columns and collaborating with botanical illustrators, helping to popularize botany among the public.
1947 The inaugural episode of the BBC’s beloved Gardeners' Question Time aired, continuing to enrich and support gardeners worldwide by answering over 35,000 questions since its launch. Originally linked to the Dig for Victory campaign, the show celebrates the timeless appeal of gardening.
