Botanical History On This Day
1872 Anniversary of the death of Zina Pitcher, the renowned American physician, educator, and amateur botanist. He was a regent at the University of Michigan, twice mayor of Detroit, and president of the American Medical Association.
Among his botanical contributions, he discovered Pitcher’s Thistle (Cirsium pitcheri), a rare white to pale pink flowering thistle native to Great Lakes beaches. His keen eye and dedication helped shape Michigan’s natural sciences and education.
1810 Birthday of English botanist Thomas Nuttall, who embarked on expeditions to explore the flora of the American Northwest, discovering species such as the Dwarf Lake Iris (Iris lacustris), now Michigan’s state wildflower.
Nuttall’s work greatly enriched the botanical knowledge of the Great Lakes region and beyond.
1913 Willis Linn Jepson’s efforts led to the founding of the California Botanical Society, marking a pivotal moment in the study of California’s rich plant diversity. Jepson’s contributions to botany earned him recognition as “The Botany Man” of California.
Unearthed Words
Celebrate the timeless wonder of the season with words from Edith Pargeter, whose novels blend gardening, history, and mystery.
Edith wrote,
“Every spring is the only spring — a perpetual astonishment.”

Today's Botanic Spark
April 12 is National Licorice Day. Known as “sweet root,” licorice’s distinctive flavor comes from glycyrrhetinic acid found deep in its lengthy roots. Historically used by soldiers and herbalists alike for both sustenance and healing, licorice remains a favorite flavor and remedy around the world.
