Botanical History On This Day
1844 Birthday of Helene Cramer, the German flower and landscape painter born in Hamburg.
Forbidden by her father to pursue art, Helene only began painting at the age of 38, alongside her sister Molly. She became known for exquisite still lifes of flowers and fruits, exhibiting widely in Germany and internationally, including the 1883 World’s Fair in Chicago. Her favorite work is "Marsh Marigolds and Crown Imperials." Both sisters are buried in Hamburg's Garden of Women.
2020 Anniversary of the publication of A Naturalist in the Amazon: The Journals & Writings of Henry Walter Bates, chronicling the self-taught English naturalist’s 11-year exploration of the Amazon rainforest.
Surviving illness and hardship, Bates collected over 15,000 insects, many of which were new to science. His work with Alfred Russel Wallace shaped evolutionary theory, though Bates admitted to deep loneliness in his remote ventures.
Unearthed Words
Today's excerpt is from Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. His reflection on the season’s arrival in Paris noted how spring could be sudden and fragile, sometimes delayed or nearly lost, yet ultimately unstoppable.

Read my review of James Sowerby by Paul Henderson, a comprehensive biography of the 18th- and 19th-century botanical illustrator whose stunning 36-volume series, “Sowerby’s Botany,” combined scholarly research with over 2,500 hand-colored plates. Henderson reveals the life of a man whose art and science forever enriched botanical literature.

Today's Botanic Spark
2017 The Beijing Crabapple Conference began on this day, celebrating the legacy of nurseryman Jim Zampini. Creator of prized cultivars like Brandywine and Weeping Candied Apple, Zampini shaped American crabapple landscapes. Known for dense branches and fragrant blossoms, crabapples charm spring gardens with their delicate flowers and symbolic folklore.
