Botanical History On This Day

1847 Birthday of Ellen Thayer Fisher, American botanical illustrator known for her exquisite watercolor still lifes of flowers and plants. Born in Boston, Ellen was largely self-taught and sometimes collaborated with her brother, the artist Abbott Handerson Thayer. Her work was widely reproduced as chromolithographs by publisher Louis Prang and exhibited at major art societies, leaving a lasting legacy in the field of botanical art. Popular pieces include Blackberries, Poppies, and Thistles, which are visited by bumblebees.

1886 Birthday of Sir Edward James Salisbury, eminent English botanist and ecologist. Known for his directorship of Kew Gardens and pioneering studies on seed dispersal in bombed areas during World War II, Salisbury authored the classic "Weeds and Aliens." His passion for native habitats and ecological accuracy influenced modern botany, and his strong views included famously critiquing artificial double lilies as a “crime against God and man.”

Today's Botanic Spark

April 16 marks National Orchid Day, celebrating one of the most intricate and enduringly popular flower families. Orchids, admired for their complexity and diversity, captivate gardeners with their beauty and long-lasting blooms. Inspired by orchid enthusiasts like Enid Haupt and insightful reflections by Stephen Jay Gould, orchids remind us of nature’s inventive resilience.
