Botanical History On This Day

1838 Birthday of John Muir, Scottish-American naturalist, writer, and passionate advocate for wilderness preservation, known as the "Father of the National Parks." His writings and activism helped establish Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks, inspiring generations to appreciate and protect wild places.

John believed in the spiritual and healing power of nature, famously saying, “The mountains are calling, and I must go,” and inviting all to seek renewal in the natural world.

1864 Death anniversary of Benjamin Maund, English botanist, publisher, and innovator in plant illustration and cultivation. Maund’s influential periodical, The Botanic Garden, showcased exquisite botanical artworks and descriptions, bringing knowledge of hardy ornamental plants to garden enthusiasts. His pioneering work influenced generations of gardeners and artists alike.
