Botanical History On This Day

1564 Birthday of William Shakespeare, England’s beloved playwright and poet, whose works abound with rich botanical imagery and symbolism. From roses that symbolize love and beauty to thyme, musk roses, and eglantine woven through plays like A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet, Shakespeare’s use of plants deepens character and theme. Today, over 50 Shakespeare Gardens worldwide cultivate the very flowers he wrote about, preserving his floral legacy for gardeners and theater lovers alike.

1807 Anniversary of the death of poet William Wordsworth, nature enthusiast whose favorite flower was the springtime Lesser Celandine. His beloved “pilewort” graces his tombstone, though a sculptor mistakenly carved the greater celandine. Wordsworth’s poems celebrate this star-shaped golden bloom, calling it a bright herald of spring’s return in wet woodlands and fields.

Unearthed Words

Susan Fenimore Cooper reflects on the enduring charms of the simple flowers that return year after year—those native blossoms that root us in constancy and affection. Her thoughtful words deepen our appreciation for nature’s familiar gifts, reminding us that the joy of gardens lies not just in novelty but in the reliable bloom of violets and ground laurels.

Today's Botanic Spark

April 23 is St. George’s Day, celebrated with the blooming of English Bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta), a flower rich with symbolism and folklore. Celebrated by poet Cicely Mary Barker and cherished in English woodlands, bluebells carpet the woods in sapphire hues each spring, reminding us of the royal beauty and fragile simplicity at the heart of nature.
