Botanical History On This Day
1902 Birth of Thomas Church, visionary landscape architect and father of the “California Garden.” Champion of tailored, low-maintenance designs, Church’s landmark book, Gardens are for People, defined a personalized, principle-driven approach. He pioneered features like kidney-shaped pools, groundcovers, deck terraces, and “outdoor rooms”—inspiring gardens with a sense of movement and freedom, perfectly suited for American life.
1952 On this day, Tulip clusiana (the Persian, Peppermint, or Lady Tulip) charmed gardeners with candy-striped blooms. Revered since the days of botanist Clusius, who grew it in Flanders, Clusiana tulips remain celebrated for their vibrant, sun-opening flowers and centuries-old journey from Persia to European gardens.

April 27 marks the ancient Roman feast of Flora, goddess of flowers, spring, and renewal—mother of fruit, wife of Zephyr, and namesake for “flora.” The Floralia festival celebrated her with flowers, music, and bright attire, heralding the awakening of the green world. Flora’s enduring gift to the world? Honey—the original prize of the spring garden and the goddess’s sweet legacy.
