Goodbye April....Hello May, Already! | Shoestring Elegance | Theresa Begin

Botanical History On This Day

1877 Birth of Alice B. Toklas, American-born member of Paris’s avant-garde and the life partner of Gertrude Stein. On this day, we remember how Alice’s famed cookbook captured both her freewheeling culinary spirit and the joys and challenges of tending a vegetable garden at Bilignin, in southeastern France—complete with lost beans, late frosts, and the discovery of snakes among strawberries, all of which ultimately yielded baskets of wonder and delight.

1883 Anniversary of the death of Édouard Manet, French modernist painter renowned for ‘Music in the Tuileries Gardens’ and his devotion to peonies at Gennevilliers. Sensitive to criticism, Manet viewed still life as the “touchstone of painting” and captured peonies—his favorite—in lush, expressive strokes. Generations later, the peonies in his canvases have faded from pink to white, while the flowers remain a symbol of enduring beauty and love, outlasting even marriage.

Unearthed Words

An excerpt from Rachel Joyce’s The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry about a perfect spring day—sweet air, blue sky, an eruption of growth everywhere.

Forsythia blazed, young willow shimmered, and potato shoots fingered up through the soil, creating an abundance so joyful “it was enough to make him giddy.”
