Botanical History On This Day
1904 Birthday of Canadian naturalist and conservationist Charles Joseph Sauriol, passionately devoted to preserving Ontario’s forests and waterways, especially the Don River Valley. His lifelong diary shares intimate gardening insights and nature observations, celebrating pansies, wildflower gardens, and the simple joy of tending to creatures like toads. Today, the annual Charles Sauriol Leadership Award honors outstanding contributions to conservation.
1912 Birthday of prolific writer and poet May Sarton, whose literature deeply connects to themes of humanity, mindfulness, and the garden as a mirror of life’s losses and triumphs. Known for heartfelt reflections, she famously said, “A garden is always a series of losses set against a few triumphs, like life itself,” inviting readers into the spiritual grace found in gardening.
