Botanical History On This Day
1893 Birthday of New Zealand forester and botanist Mary Sutherland, the world's first formally qualified female forestry professional. Graduating from Bangor University in 1916, she pioneered forestry in New Zealand, held a botanical artist’s talent, and is honored with a memorial redwood at a forest she once called her office. The Mary Sutherland Award celebrates top female forestry students today.
1929 Birthday of Academy Award-winning actress and gardener Audrey Hepburn. Known for her role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and her appearance in the PBS series Gardens of the World, she championed gardening as an act of hope, famously stating, “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” The rose named after her is known for fragrant apple-blossom pink flowers.

1879 In his book A Year in a Lancashire Garden, Henry Arthur Bright reflected on a May marked by lilac blossoms and an array of vibrant flowering trees and shrubs. While early warmth charmed the garden, he noted that the singular delay of the ash tree to leaf was deemed a herald of a fine hot summer, a hopeful symbol of nature’s rhythms and promises.
