A farmer to chef reveals his deep vegetable knowledge | Agrinews | Mark Kennedy
Botanical History On This Day
1742 Birthday of Swiss pastor and botanist Jean Senebier, who elucidated the role of leaves in photosynthesis by discovering that plants consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen. He famously said, “Observation and experiment are two sisters who help each other,” laying foundational knowledge for plant biology and environmental science.
1859 Death anniversary of polymath Alexander von Humboldt, renowned for scientific explorations across the Americas. Humboldt’s holistic view of nature as an interconnected web was revolutionary, exemplified by his assertion,
“Everything is Interaction.”
His legacy includes naming the mahogany genus Swietenia and pioneering environmental observation methods.
Unearthed Words
From Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine: Gardening as a philosophical sanctuary, where tending plants like aconites in unexpected places offers time for solitary reflection and mental rejuvenation, likening gardeners to Plato among peonies and Socrates nurturing hemlock.

Today's Botanic Spark
1917 The Fresno Morning Republican covered the celebratory Raisin Day Parade, marking 40 years of growth in California’s raisin industry. The parade featured five floats depicting pioneer journeys, vineyard struggles, and prosperity, culminating with the appearance of the original Sun-Maid Raisin Girl, symbolizing cooperative success and agricultural wealth.
