Botanical History On This Day
1700 Birthday of Dutch botanist Gerard van Swieten, who modernized medical education in Austria under Empress Maria Theresa, establishing botanical gardens and chemical labs. A student of Boerhaave, he influenced European medical practice and corresponded with Linnaeus. The mahogany genus Swietenia honors his legacy.
1846 First printed publication of Poems by the Brontë sisters under pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Although only two copies were sold initially, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne treasured their small currant bush gardens, bonding through loss in a tight-knit family that inspired timeless literature rich in nature imagery and deep emotion.
Unearthed Words
An excerpt from Kurt Vonnegut’s If This Isn't Nice, What Is?
The concept of six seasons—adding “Locking” and “Unlocking” between the traditional four—captures the subtle shifts in nature’s rhythms, reminding us that nature’s cycles defy strict definitions and profoundly affect our mood and perception.
