Botanical History On This Day
1864 On this day, Private William Christman became the first person buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Once a property of the Custis family, Arlington House—overlooking 1,100 acres—was cherished by Mary Custis Lee, who tended roses, honeysuckle, and jasmine in its gardens. The Civil War transformed the estate into a burial ground, beginning with Christman’s resting place, now home to over 400,000 graves.
1911 The Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York City officially opened to the public. The garden features over 200 cherry trees of 42 species, as well as diverse spaces including the first free-access Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden in America, the Cranford Rose Garden, Native Flora Garden, Shakespeare Garden, Fragrance Garden, and Children’s Garden. Before the pandemic, it welcomed nearly a million visitors annually.
