Botanical History On This Day

1840 Birthday of American poet George Cooper, known for his cheerful lyrics often paired with Stephen Foster’s music. Cooper’s poem My Garden tenderly reflects on nature’s changing seasons, finding joy in the smallest flower pot during winter’s hush.

1938 Canadian naturalist and conservationist Charles Joseph Sauriol, born on this day, delighted in gardening surprises. His journal notes pansies as “surprise packets” and the transplantation of wildflowers, such as bleeding heart —a delicate, heart-shaped blossom known for its folklore and evocative shape, inspiring stories of enduring love and sacrifice.

1946 Premiere of Paul Hindemith’s composition When Lilacs Last in the Door-Yard Bloom’d, inspired by Walt Whitman’s poem mourning President Lincoln. Whitman’s nature-infused verses reflect deep healing power in open air, rye fields, and blooming orchards, symbolizing hope amid loss.
