Then and now: 7 ways garden design has evolved over the last 40 years | House Beautiful | Olivia Heath

Botanical History On This Day

1834 Birthday of Catherine Furbish, a self-taught American botanist cherished for her exquisite illustrations and lifelong exploration of Maine’s native flora. Her dedication defied 19th-century gender norms, earning respect from scientific peers and leading to the discovery of the endangered Furbish Lousewort, which once halted dam construction. Her tireless fieldwork remains a beacon for botanical art and conservation.

1898 Birth of Emma Genevieve Gillette, honored as the First Lady of Michigan State Parks. As a pioneering landscape architect trained under Jens Jensen, she led efforts to protect and expand Michigan’s parks, securing over 200,000 acres, including Sleeping Bear Dunes, and served on President Johnson’s Committee on Recreation and Natural Beauty, leaving an enduring natural legacy.

1864 The Death anniversary of Nathaniel Hawthorne, an American novelist whose 1843 tale imaginatively linked botanical remedies and human fate in a story where a remedy for leaf blotches tragically fades his wife’s birthmark and life, symbolizing the interweaving of beauty, obsession, and mortality with the garden world.

Unearthed Words

A reading from Ellen Herrick’s The Sparrow Sisters. A family of daughters, each named after flowers by their mother Honor Sparrow, embraces their botanical namesakes as a sign of renewal and identity, turning grief into growth through their shared nursery and garden legacy.

1941 Birthday of Nora Ephron, renowned screenwriter known for romantic classics like When Harry Met Sally and You’ve Got Mail. In the latter, she penned a tender ode to daisies, highlighting their friendly charm and sentimental meaning in a memorable scene, embodying the quiet beauty and connection that flowers bring to life.
