Botanical History On This Day
1535 Birth of Leonhard Rauwolf, the German physician and botanist, who journeyed through the Near East in search of new herbal medicines, documenting gardens and crop diversity, especially in Tripoli. His travel writings offer a vivid glimpse into the rich horticulture and water management of the region in the 16th century.
1898 Birth of Donald Culross Peattie, America’s beloved naturalist and author. Peattie brought botany to the masses, writing lyrical books about plants and trees, including Flowering Earth. His work celebrated the importance of wood and the restorative power of walking in nature.
