Botanical History On This Day

1817 Birth of Richard Spruce, English botanist and bryologist known for his 15-year botanical exploration of the Amazon. He notably smuggled cinchona saplings, key to malaria treatment, and admired the subtle beauty of mosses and liverworts.

1825 The French King Charles X honored Belgian botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté, famed for exquisite flower paintings, including those of Queen Marie Antoinette’s collection and Malmaison gardens. He was dubbed "the Raffaele of flowers."

1855 Birth of Robert Koldewey, the German archaeologist who excavated the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon site. He discovered the famous Ishtar Gate, parts of which are now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.

1870 Birth of Lilian Gibbs, British botanist and explorer, the first woman to ascend Mount Kinabalu. Several plants, including a bamboo species, bear her name in honor of her contributions.

1903 Birth of Cyril Connolly, English literary critic and writer, known for his poetic lines, such as appreciating fallen leaves over daffodils.

1806 The botanist David Hosack wrote to Thomas Jefferson regarding the Lewis and Clark expedition. He hoped to collect seeds of any new and useful plants discovered, illustrating early American botanical curiosity and exploration.
