Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty
Botanical History On This Day
1750 Birth of Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, German landscape gardener who introduced the English garden style to Germany. His notable work includes transforming baroque gardens at Nymphenburg Palace, where his lasting creation, the Geranium House, remains a historic glasshouse today.
1844 Birth of Anna Massey Lea Merritt, American painter and printmaker who studied and painted landscapes and portraiture. She viewed the dock weed with suspicion for its weak stalk but persistent roots.
1916 Incident involving Dr. Henry Hurd Rusby, noted botanist and medical faculty dean, who shot a teenager stealing peaches from his orchard, intending only to frighten the boys, highlighting early challenges in orchard protection.
Unearthed Words
In Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Giles Milton humorously reflects on starting as an inexperienced gardening magazine editor, openly admitting his lack of knowledge but nonetheless sharing earnest advice—until he discovered his true skill in orchestrating widespread destruction.
