1613 Death of Sir Thomas Overbury, English poet and writer who died mysteriously from poisoning while imprisoned in the Tower of London. Among his memorable sayings was, “The man who has nothing to boast of but his ancestors is like a potato - the only good belonging to him is underground.”
1699 Baptism of Batty Langley, English garden designer and architect, famed for designing mesmerizing garden mazes and blending formal Baroque gardens with natural landscapes. His work was admired by George Washington, who included Langley’s New Principles of Gardening in his library at Mount Vernon.
1931 Birth of Susan Campbell, English illustrator, food writer, and garden historian, famed for her exhaustive research on over 700 walled kitchen gardens. She co-founded the Walled Kitchen Garden Network and revealed the secret allure of these hidden gardens behind their imposing walls.
