Botanical History On This Day
1651 Birth of Engelbert Kaempfer, German naturalist, physician, and explorer. He is renowned for his ten-year travels through Asia and for bringing back the first botanical specimens from Japan, including the first Western description of the Ginkgo tree in his medical and botanical work Amoenitatum Exoticarum.
1876 Birth of Marian Cruger Coffin, one of America’s first female landscape architects. After pioneering her own practice, she designed estates for the East Coast elite, emphasizing that gardeners must handle shears with care, lest they cause damage that is hard to reverse.
1887 Birth of Annette Hoyt Flanders, American landscape architect and advocate for preserving gardens during economic hardship, reminding us that beauty need not be grand to be meaningful.
Unearthed Words
In King’s Mountain, Sharyn McCrumb poignantly captures the breath held in late September, as summer fades and autumn prepares to take stage.
