Botanical History On This Day
1552 Birth of Lorenz Scholz von Rosenau, a German botanist, polyglot, and physician known for creating masterful botanical and medical references. He cultivated a large garden divided into four quadrants, complete with a dining hall and an art gallery. He was an early pioneer of potato cultivation in Europe during a time when nightshade plants were feared.
1872 Birth of Mary Sophie Young, a pioneering American botanist and explorer who managed the Texas herbarium. Her journals reflect a deep connection to nature, noting the "uncanny feeling" of consciousness among plants and insects during her botanical expeditions.
1902 Birth of Stevie Smith, an English poet and novelist famous for her unique perspective on flowers, emphasizing their strength and beauty, such as in her lines on lilacs.
