Botanical History On This Day

1694 Birth of Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, English statesman and writer known for his witty letters and poetry. He advised, "Take care of the minutes, for hours will take care of themselves," and penned charming verses like "On a Lady Stung By a Bee," blending humor and tenderness.

1800 Birth of George Bentham, English botanist and taxonomist whose practical and widely accessible plant classifications laid the foundation for modern taxonomy. His collaborative works include the influential Genera Plantarum and a comprehensive flora of Australia. Notably, Nicotiana benthamiana, crucial for vaccine development, bears his name.

Today is also the Feast Day of Phocas the Gardener, a third-century Turkish gardener and saint. Known for his hospitality and generosity, he utilized the bounty of his garden to aid the poor and became a symbol of connection through gardening.

Today's Botanic Spark

1882 On this day, the Garden Palace in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden was engulfed in a devastating fire visible for miles. Modeled after London’s Crystal Palace, it was completed for the 1879 International Exhibition but stood for only three years. Today, the Pioneer Memorial Garden commemorates this lost landmark and Australia’s rich heritage.
