1810 Birth of Elizabeth Gaskell, English novelist and gardener celebrated for weaving flowers, fragrances, and country life into her works such as Mary Barton and Wives and Daughters. She valued the simple joy of lilies of the valley gathered by loved ones over expensive bouquets.
