Botanical History On This Day

1777 Birth of Simón de Rojas Clemente, Spanish botanist, intellectual, politician, and spy considered the father of European ampelography—the study and classification of grapevines. He journeyed disguised across North Africa as part of a spying mission and later directed the Royal Botanical Garden library in Madrid. His collection of grapevine specimens dates from before the phylloxera blight and remains invaluable today.

1821 Birth of Henri Frederic Amiel, Swiss philosopher and poet. He reflected on the beauty and bittersweet nature of autumn, encouraging us to find grace in this season of harvest, preparation, and change, and to find deep lessons even in a modest garden.

1877 Birth of James Drummond Dole, “Pineapple King” and pioneering Hawaiian pineapple industrialist. He transformed the pineapple industry, proving commercial success with the Smooth Cayenne variety and popularizing pineapple in American culture, including its iconic upside-down cake. Remarkably, the bromelain enzyme in fresh pineapple prevents gelatin from setting, but cooking destroys it, allowing canned pineapple to work in jellies.

Unearthed Words

Catherynne M. Valente captures the vibrant, irresistible quality of orange—from leaves and marigolds to pumpkins and butterscotch—in The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making. Catherynne spins a whimsical tale of a girl enchanted by an orange parrot named Halloween, showing how color stirs our senses and inspires stories.
