Botanical History On This Day

1669 Death of Henry King, English poet and Bishop of Chichester, who was a close friend of John Donne. His poignant verses honor the simple beauty and humility of flowers, appreciating their natural grace without vanity.

1901 Birth of Helia Bravo Hollis, pioneering Mexican botanist and expert on cacti, known as The Queen of the Cacti. She co-founded the Mexican Cactus Society and directed the Botanical Gardens at UNAM, where she supported her staff even during strikes. Her legacy is honored with a botanical garden and a Google Doodle.

1910 Birth of Edward Solomon Hyams, British gardener, historian, and writer who promoted self-sufficient gardening after WWII. He admired botanical species tulips over hybrids and chronicled the transformation of Nut Tree Cottages into a productive market garden.
