Botanical History On This Day

1874 Birth of LeRoy Abrams, American botanist and professor who explored Southern California extensively, collecting plant specimens from various terrains including Santa Barbara, Yuma, and Old Baldy. He published Flora of Los Angeles and Vicinity and taught botany at Stanford for 34 years, influencing many, including famed botanist Ynes Mexia.

1972 The Tampa Tribune profiled Eudora Welty, the American short story writer, during the writing of her last book, Losing Battles. Despite serious challenges such as nematode attacks on her roses, Welty maintained humor and perspective, reflecting how some characters—and roses—thrive while others don’t.

2019 Amateur botanist Glenn Leiper received the Australian Native Plants Award. He co-authored Mangroves to Mountains and rediscovered the once-thought-extinct rainforest myrtle tree, Gossia gonoclada. Glenn gained recognition for spotting a native violet from his car, resulting in a plant named Androcalva leiperi in his honor, showcasing his keen botanical eye.

Unearthed Words

In Season of Mists, Neil Gaiman shares his thoughtful, slightly cynical take on October, reminding us that ending a book is never the end of the story.

He suggests that true happy endings come from finding “a sunny place in a garden, where the light is golden, and the grass is soft; somewhere to rest, to stop reading, and to be content.”
