Botanical History On This Day

1761/1762 Birth of William Gilpin, English artist, teacher, clergyman, and landscape designer who coined the term "picturesque." His travelogue on Ross-on-Wye became England's first tourist guide, inspiring visitors to appreciate the scenic Wye River and its landscapes.

1853 On this day, Henry David Thoreau wrote in his journal about early autumn: “The maples are reddening, and birches yellowing. The mouse-ear in the shade... looks as if the frost still lay on it. Bumblebees are on the Aster undulatus, and gnats are dancing in the air.”

1862 Birth of Edward Stratemeyer, prolific American publisher and founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, producing over 1,300 books, including The Bobbsey Twins and The Hardy Boys. His Nancy Drew series debuted the very day he passed away.

After his death, his widow, Magdalene Van Camp, made Bird Haven farm her weekend retreat, and later, their daughter, Harriet, ran the family business while residing there. Today, Bird Haven Farm in Tewksbury Township is part of the Garden Conservancy's Open Day. It has been redesigned as a medieval village garden, featuring mature trees, orchards, ponds, mazes, and more. The current owner, Janet Mavec, is inspired by the flora and fauna there, creating whimsical jewelry inspired by the garden’s vegetables and wildlife.

Today's Botanic Spark

1858 Birth of Dorothy Gurney, English poet and hymn writer of the beloved wedding hymn O Perfect Love. Her garden verse from God’s Garden continues to inspire:

The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,
One is nearer God’s heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.
