Botanical History On This Day

1524 Birth of Joachim Patinir, Flemish Renaissance painter credited with founding landscape painting as an independent art form. His imaginary world landscapes blend vibrant colors and sweeping panoramic views with small religious scenes, captivating viewers with intricate detail.

1850 Birth of William Hamilton Gibson, American illustrator, author, and naturalist. From childhood, he loved nature and studied botany at the Gunn School. Gibson became renowned for his detailed nature illustrations and helped save Prospect Park by advocating against the urban destruction of its wild spaces.

1873 Birth of Merritt Lyndon Fernald, prolific American botanist who authored over 800 papers and co-wrote Edible Wild Plants of Eastern North America. He also captured botanical poetry, such as his ode to the pink-blooming Rhodora azalea, celebrated for brightening spring landscapes.
