1849 Birth of James Whitcomb Riley, beloved American poet from Indiana known as the Hoosier poet. His poems, often written in dialect, celebrated everyday life and nature, including classics like "When the Frost is on the Punkin" and "When The Green Gits Back In The Trees," capturing the rhythms of the seasons.
1900 The St. Louis Post-Dispatch highlighted the Engelmann Botanical Club's autumn wildflower exhibition, showcasing local fall blooms like goldenrod, asters, and the vivid Cardinal Lobelia. The club honored Dr. Engelmann’s botanical legacy and educated visitors on seed dispersal and the beauty of fall plants.
1935 Birth of Thomas Keneally, Australian novelist famous for Schindler’s Ark, the basis for the film Schindler’s List. A childhood asthma sufferer, Thomas helped open Australia’s first Asthma and Allergy Friendly Garden, promoting low-allergen planting and accessible gardening tips.
