1825 Birth of Hermann Wendland, German botanist known for his pioneering work with palms and for naming over 500 species. His cultivation of African violets (Saintpaulia) brought a beloved houseplant to the world, though its native habitat in Tanzania faces extinction.
1875 Birth of Arthur William Hill, English botanist and Kew Gardens director, who during WWI documented poppy-covered battlefields, reflecting on their poignant, sacral beauty amid the scars of war.
