1818 On this day, Philadelphia botanist Zaccheus Collins wrote to Jacob Bigelow detailing a shipment of plant specimens, including Virginia snakeroot and wild sweet potato vine, highlighting his extensive plant collection from Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

1825 Birth of Hermann Wendland, German botanist known for his pioneering work with palms and for naming over 500 species. His cultivation of African violets (Saintpaulia) brought a beloved houseplant to the world, though its native habitat in Tanzania faces extinction.

1875 Birth of Arthur William Hill, English botanist and Kew Gardens director, who during WWI documented poppy-covered battlefields, reflecting on their poignant, sacral beauty amid the scars of war.
