Botanical History On This Day

1878 The Chicago Tribune featured Victor Hugo, an exiled French writer who found refuge on Guernsey Island. There, he cultivated a garden and completed Les Misérables. His oak tree, planted in 1870, symbolized his vision of a United States of Europe.

1895 On this day, a poem called An October Song by Clinton Scollard captured the golden hues of autumn with vivid descriptions of pippins, peaches, and goldenrod glowing like hair.

1995 Forester Mark Vitosh advised that falling pine needles and needle discoloration in autumn are normal (not a sign of disease), encouraging gardeners to enjoy the brilliant yellow fall colors of their conifers.

Unearthed Words

October knew, of course, that the action of turning a page, of ending a chapter, or of shutting a book did not end a tale. Having admitted that, he would also avow that happy endings were never difficult to find:
"It is simply a matter," he explained to April, "of finding a sunny place in a garden, where the light is golden, and the grass is soft; somewhere to rest, to stop reading, and to be content."
G. K. Chesterton, The Man Who Was October

Today's Botanic Spark

1868 On this day, Sophia Thoreau inscribed her brother Henry’s poem "Fair Haven" on a hickory leaf, preserving verses celebrating the beloved Fairhaven Hill, a favored nature retreat near Concord.

The poem’s imagery continues to inspire nature lovers and garden enthusiasts today.
