Gardener’s Checklist for October 14th | Berkshire Edge | Ron Kujawski (“kee-AH-skee”)

Adele - Easy On Me

Botanical History On This Day

1862 On this day, President Abraham Lincoln wrote to Navy Captain John Dalgren requesting a “little gun that he can not hurt himself with” for his youngest son, 9-year-old Tad. Tad’s imaginary battles with his doll, Jack, in the White House gardens charmed gardeners and family alike, culminating in Jack’s presidential pardon after a white house strawberry incident.

1888 Birth of Katherine Mansfield, New Zealand poet and writer whose vivid garden imagery and emotional short stories, like those in The Garden Party, celebrate the intimate connections between nature and human life.

1994 Quentin Tarantino’s film Pulp Fiction premiered, delighting audiences with pop culture moments, including Uma Thurman’s memorable tomato joke that playfully captures the humor in garden harvests and family life.

Unearthed Words

“Gardeners are never wicked, are they?' said Ruth.
'Obstinate and grumpy and wanting to be alone, but not wicked.
Oh, look at that creeper! I've always loved October so much, haven't you? I can see why it's called the Month of the Angels.”
Eva Ibbotson, The Morning Gift
