Botanical History On This Day

1830 Birth of Helen Hunt Jackson, American poet and writer. She championed Native American rights and penned influential works, including A Century of Dishonor and Ramona. Today, gardeners cherish her light-hearted poems, such as "Vanity of Vanities," which celebrate nature’s fleeting beauty.

1897 On this day, The Des Moines Register reported Crowd Ruins Iowa State's Flower Plots after a false rumor led 150-200 people to devastate the experimental horticulture gardens, destroying valuable research flowers meant to test cold resistance.

1951 Death of George Russell, English gardener and plant breeder known for developing the stunning Russell Lupin Hybrids. His devotion to improving lupins brought vibrant colors and unique forms that were admired in gardens, although much of his work was lost after his passing.

1959 On this day, Bloomington's Indiana University captured a photo of head gardener Hugh Wallace "Wally" Scales tending greenhouse plants. The Jordan Hall greenhouse later honored him by naming their titan arum "Wally," a tribute to his pivotal role in building the teaching conservatory’s plant collection.
