Botanical History On This Day
1809 On this day, Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. president and avid gardener, wrote to his favorite nurseryman, Bernhard McMahon, with a detailed list of plants he wished to cultivate at Monticello after leaving office. Jefferson’s letter reflects the timeless passion of gardeners eagerly awaiting the start of their growing season.
1823 Birth of John Galvin, an English-American nurseryman and Boston’s City Forester, who beautified the Boston Public Garden by installing its trees, shrubs, and flowers. Galvin also opened Boston’s first retail florist shop, revolutionizing access to flowers in the city.
1944 Del Monte advertisements during WWII emphasized the superior quality of their canned and jarred fruits over homegrown produce, charmingly capturing the sentiments of home gardeners who had learned the hard way about conservation and food preservation.
