Botanical History On This Day

1564 Birth of Galileo, the Italian astronomer, physicist, engineer, mathematician, and philosopher. Galileo believed nature’s book is written in the language of mathematics and marveled, "The sun, with all those planets revolving around it... can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do."

1803 Birth of Karl Friedrich Schimper, German botanist and poet who formulated the ice age theory, called eiszeit. He linked the golden angle to Fibonacci numbers and phyllotaxy, describing leaf arrangement spirals. His poetic ode celebrates frozen landscapes gripping the Earth in desolate white.

1876 Birth of Ernest Henry Wilson, English plant explorer who introduced over 2000 Asian species to the West. Despite a crushed leg in a landslide, he admired the regal lily as "God’s present to our gardens." His mule-lined mountain rescue remains legendary.
