Botanical History On This Day
1880 Birth of Reginald Farrer, the legendary English rock and alpine gardener, plant explorer, nurseryman, writer, and painter. Known as the "Prince of Alpine Gardeners," he created the first rock garden at the age of 14 and championed the joy of plants over mountains. His nursery, Craven, and his celebrated Gentiana farreri carry on his legacy.
1918 On this day, Dora Hughes wrote The Carrot Comes into Its Own for the New-York Tribune. She celebrated diverse carrot recipes from crecy soup to mashed carrots, croquettes, candied carrots, and French carrot dishes, highlighting carrots’ royal past and culinary versatility.
