Botanical History On This Day
1554 Death of Hieronymus Bock, German botanist, physician, and Lutheran minister, considered one of the fathers of modern botany. He tended the gardens of Count Palatine Ludwig and was among the first field botanists searching for plants throughout Germany. Bock coined the term "Riesling" and was honored with the grass genus Tragus and the spurge genus Tragia, which were named after him.
1801 Birth of John Henry Newman, English theologian, scholar, and poet, whose words introduce Abram Linwood Urban's My Garden of Dreams: "The garden mystically… a place of spiritual repose, stillness, peace, refreshment, delight."
1885 Birth of Lady Joan Margaret Legge, English botanist who journeyed to the Himalayas inspired by Frank Smythe's Kamet Conquered. She died in the Valley of Flowers, a remote Himalayan treasure now a national park, and was buried there with a grave marker inscribed with words from Psalm 121.
